What Do Braces Do?
Some people grow up with naturally straight teeth that never need alignment. But for many people, as our adult teeth come in, they may be too spaced out, too overcrowded, or they might even grow in at the wrong angle.
This is where braces come in. Whatever type of braces your dentist fits, their job is to gently but firmly move the teeth into their desired position.
But what are the different types of braces for teeth?
Aligners
One of the recent methods for straightening teeth is the use of plastic aligners. The dentist takes a mold of your mouth and you’ll get a bespoke cast, meaning the aligners are a custom fit for your teeth. They are clear, and also removable so that you can eat comfortably.
Traditional Braces
The traditional method for aligning teeth is still a very effective one. Metal brackets are fitted to the teeth, and wires are fed through the brackets. These wires will be tightened just enough to move the teeth to the right place.
You can speak to your local dentist if you’ve been wondering “where can I find out about kids braces near me?”.
What About Bands?
Whether you get clear or metal braces, you may also need to wear bands on your braces. These bands may look like they don’t do much, but they are in fact a very important part of any treatment with braces.
The main purpose of braces bands is to add some extra “oomph” to the work of the braces in certain areas of your mouth. For the most part, they’re used to help fix a misaligned jaw.
For example, in the case of an overbite, the bands will be fitted to the front incisors of the top row of teeth. The other end is fitted rear teeth of the bottom row. This gently encourages the bottom row forwards.
