It’s reaching the wee hours of the morning. You’re exhausted, but your precious bundle of joy is wide awake and looking unlikely to sleep. They’ve been fed, changed, and you’re hushing everyone from your spouse to the family pet. All of this to no avail, baby is still awake. What is a frazzled parent to do to get their baby to sleep in a reasonable timeframe? Fear not, new parents, there are several great ways to get your little one to sleep more easily! Pay close attention to the following four tips and you will soon get your precious little one to snooze the night away.
Set a Routine
Babies need to live their lives by a routine. Doing so creates familiar patterns in their lives that can establish desired behaviors if adhered to regularly. Hence, it can create a sense of stability, which is necessary to the health and development of every baby.
To help establish this stability, you need to decide on a routine that you want to follow at bedtime every night and then stick to it. It can be as simple as feeding, diaper change and pajamas, but follow that routine! You need to make sure that you try and do everything at about the same time every single day. Make allowances for the fact that your baby will take some time to adjust to the routine that you set. Also, it may be tough for you to do everything at exactly the same time every day, and so you’ll need to plan ahead. If an event gets in the way of making sure that the routine is followed through, then you might want to consider hiring a babysitter to ensure that the routine is stuck to. Otherwise, you may have to spend a day or two getting your baby back into routine.
Make It Comfortable
All children like to feel safe, comfortable and secure, especially infants. Large spaces can be unfamiliar and frightening, and cause them to remain awake long past when they would ordinarily fall asleep. This may seem counterintuitive, but your baby is more likely to wake up if they are in complete silence. To a baby, silence means that their parents are not present, and presents a danger even in the subconscious. A small sleep machine or low ambient noise can provide some reassurance for your little dreamer. For naptime, slowly introduce normal household sounds, working your way to louder noises to let your baby adjust.
