In response to these devastating odds, surrogacy has become a popular solution. Whether someone is struggling to conceive or missed the timing on their biological clock, surrogacy allows them a second chance at having the family they always dreamed of.
Now, becoming a surrogate isn’t easy. It’s laborious work (literally) but incredibly rewarding. If you’ve been thinking about how to become a surrogate then sit right there as we go through everything you need to know before making this journey.
In This Post:
Types of Surrogacy
There are two types of surrogacy that you can choose to partake in.
The first one is traditional surrogacy. With this type, the surrogate mother is the biological mother. In this process, you would donate your egg to the pregnancy, and you would become pregnant via intrauterine insemination.
The second type is gestational surrogacy. With gestational, an already fertilized embryo is placed inside the surrogate and then carried to term. This allows the parents to be the biological parents, even if they cannot carry the pregnancy.
You can choose to participate in one or both styles of surrogacy, depending on what you’re comfortable with.
Common Surrogate Requirements
Along with being a willing participant, there are quite a few requirements that one needs to fill.
To qualify as a candidate, you must:
- Be between 21-43 years old
- Have previously carried a pregnancy to term with no complications
- Have a healthy baby with no issues
- Currently raising the baby
- Cannot have birthed more than 5 children
You must also be financially stable without public assistance and have good mental and physical health. Smokers and those with a history of clinical illness will not be viable surrogates or those with a BMI over 35 (although there is some wiggle room here).
This isn’t a requirement but something you should deeply consider. When you become a surrogate, your pregnancy isn’t your own. There are a lot of people and other opinions involved that you have to respect and abide by. If you’re not comfortable giving up that much control, then we do not suggest surrogacy.
Now, you may be wondering how much do surrogates make?
While giving the gift of life might seem like enough, financial compensation doesn’t hurt. On average, a surrogate makes $25,000. This can change depending on each situation.
It’s also important to note that during the pregnancy, all fees and needs would be covered by the intended family. This includes hospital bills, maternity clothes, and everything else.
Becoming a Surrogate: The Ultimate Gift
There are many reasons to become a surrogate, from helping a family to gaining financial benefits, but ultimately, it’s a choice you need to make.
Think about the things discussed here and ask yourself: Are you okay with becoming a surrogate? Do you qualify as a candidate for surrogacy? Are you ready to begin this journey?
