School Types: What Is Best For Your Child?

When your child is old enough to be in school, there are a few choices that you have as to the type of education you want for your child. It’s best to start as young as possible as there are preschools in almost all areas. Once there is a foundation, you can begin thinking about elementary, middle and high schools.

Preschools

These are the basic foundations of the educational career. Children can often enter when they are 2, and they can stay until they start kindergarten, which is usually age 5. A focus is placed on learning the basics of what is needed for school, such as colors, letters and socializing with others. There is still time to play outside, and snacks and lunch are often served.

Elementary School

There are a few different choices that you have with elementary schools. A public school receives funding by the state. The state often mandates what is taught and the activities that take place. Children can participate in sports. While there is a structured schedule, most teachers have freedom with how they handle the classroom. A charter school is one that is started by parents and teachers, which gives more freedom to the subject material taught and the dress code.

Middle School

When you think about middle school, you probably think about a time when children are discovering who they are. There are still public and charter schools to choose from, but you want to make sure you enroll your child in a school where the child can thrive. A private school is ideal if you want more time to be spent in individual education. Charter schools do have smaller classes, but you won’t get as much attention as you would with a private school. In public middle schools, you will have sports and clubs for children to choose from, such as chorus or yearbook.

High School

Once children reach high school, the charter and private aspects seem to fade away. They are still present, but there is more of a focus on the public school system as there are more classes offered and more ways to get the education that is needed before going to college or entering the career field. Students can participate in one of several sports and extracurricular activities in high school. Those who want to attend college can take advanced courses in high school so that they are prepared for what is ahead. An online masters degree in organizational development is an example of a career that business courses in high school would assist with.

It might seem like an easy decision enrolling your child in school, but you need to think about the type of education that you want your child to get. A private school will give the one-on-one attention that is needed for students who might have difficulties learning or who are advanced in their studies while a public school offers more in the way of extra activities on top of classes.
