Going to your OBGYN should be normal and safe, but that does not mean it does not come with its share of worries. No one wants to imagine this, but errors can happen, and your doctor is human. The following are a few things you can do if your OBGYN makes a mistake during your visit.
Pregnancy Misdiagnoses
An OBGYN is supposed to take the right test to make sure you know exactly what type of pregnancy you will have, but sometimes these tests are skipped. What you want to do if you find out something about your pregnancy late is ask if all the required tests were administered.
Non-Baby Misdiagnoses
Not every mistake an OBGYN makes deals with pregnancy. For example, the OBGYN is supposed to be able to diagnose certain issues beforehand after examining you in your pap smear appointment. One issue that your health care specialist should be able to see is cancer. An OBGYN who fails to diagnose something like this even though he or she had all the tools to do so might be at fault.
Baby Injury
Giving birth is supposed to be magical, but errors can turn this into a nightmare. You may not want to imagine this, but an error during delivery can lead to infant injuries. Of course, the first thing you want to do is make sure you figure out what the injuries are to ensure that your baby gets the help that he or she needs. You can take the baby to a trusted doctor if you wish. What you want to do is ask how the mistake was made if you can. It would be a good idea to contact a lawyer to make sure everything is done right.
Surgical Errors
Your OBGYN can be entrusted with a number of surgical procedures like tying your tubes or a C-section. Both of these are considered routine procedures, but that does not mean errors cannot happen. Complications need to be documented so that you can use this against the guilty party. Be sure to request a copy of the entire medical report because you are going to need it later on.
Hopefully, this information is something you never have to use. No one should ever have to go through these kinds of errors, which could have dire consequences. Still, it is good to at least know what to do should something happen.
