Becoming a first time mum can be a scary and exciting time, so it is a good thing that there are many products out there that will make your life with a newborn more convenient, comfortable and efficient. Try out some of the following products so that you can simply relax and enjoy spending time with the newest member of your family.

Useful Gadgets

Gadgets aren’t for babies per se, but a Smart Phone, iPhone or iPad will definitely contribute to your emotional wellbeing while caring for your baby. Such gadgets may help you endure those long, sleepless nights of rocking your baby to sleep by allowing you to check your emails, text and browse the Internet. They may also come in handy if you have any questions or concerns about your baby and need quick access to finding help and advice. For your quickly growing baby, these gadgets will enable you to order you favourite baby brands, such as Bonds, online.

Breastfeeding Made Easy

There have been many incredible developments in maternity wear, especially with the newest styles of breastfeeding tops and dresses. New fashions have managed to combine great maternity wear with useful breastfeeding features, making the clothes wearable both before and after the baby is born. The variety of styles makes it possible not only for you to breastfeed anytime and anywhere, but you can also feel good knowing that you look fabulous.

A Stroller to Suit Your Lifestyle

These days, strollers do more than simply get you and your baby from point A to point B. Strollers come in many styles and serve many purposes, ranging from those that are useful for simple walks in the park to strollers that resemble all terrain vehicles with the suspension, tyres and manoeuvrability that allows you to hit the trails with your baby for either running or walking on more vigorous terrain. When picking out a stroller, make sure you take it for a test drive and practice opening and closing it so that you know it will work for you.

Baby On the Go

Having a baby doesn’t necessarily mean you no longer have the freedom and independence to enjoy your regular daily activities. With all the latest styles of baby slings out there, you are sure to find one that is comfortable and suitable for you and your baby. With a sling, you are essentially “wearing” your baby, leaving your hands free to do other tasks such as shopping, and keeps your baby visible to you at all times. You can get a sling to suit every purpose – even exercises such as yoga are doable with your baby with the right sling!

All Things Diapers

With a newborn baby, you will need to be able to deal with the high volume of used diapers that are coming your way, as well as be prepared with fresh diapers at any given moment. Diaper disposal units are a necessity for every baby changing station as they act as both a dirty diaper receptacle and do well to mask the smell, reducing the number of trips you will make out the rubbish bin. Additionally, every new mum needs a diaper bag or two: a bag that has loads of compartments, that is lightweight, and that is stylish enough to carry around everywhere.

Working moms today face a great many challenges. With the many things that you’re doing, it’s not always easy to fit in the things that you want to do. You’re scheduling and planning and working non stop in ways that can make life remarkably challenging. Not the least of the challenges is your return to work after your maternity leave is over. Unfortunately, it doesn’t last forever, but there are things you can do that will make the transition a great deal easier for you and your new baby.

Planning and Preparation

Start planning early for your return to work. Making sure that you have adequate and excellent coverage for infant care is the first order of the day. Getting what you need for your child so far as child care well prior to going back to work is imperative. It should not be a last minute decision who will care for your child when you return to work. Ideally you’re going to want to leave your baby with that person for a few sessions in order to prepare them for the changes. It may seem to you that your baby will be too small to notice the difference. The reality is far different.

Research and Recon

Start interviewing child care personnel or doing a walk through on the child care site that you choose long before it is time to use them. You need to be sure that you can place your trust in the child care provider that you are considering. Get references and check them out thoroughly, as well as spending an hour or two touring more than one facility before you make a final decision.

Spend one or two sessions watching the primary care giver interacting with your child and then take some short sessions where the baby stays with them prior to your returning to work. This will help them to get to know your baby and you, as well as to give them the opportunity to ask any questions that may come up about your child’s care.

Practice the New Stuff

If you plan to continue breast feeding after your return to work, make it a point to prepare for that now. One way to accomplish that will be to begin using as breast pump now so that you are accustomed to it. Feed your baby at least one or two bottles a day of breast milk so that they are accustomed to taking a bottle.

Over time, have someone else feed your baby bottles so that they are used to having a third party involved in the feeding and the bottle isn’t quite so alien to them.

According to the Mayo Clinic, you should adjust your feeding schedule about two weeks before you start back to work in order to be able to pump your breasts during the day and feed before you would be at work as well as once you get home. This will get you and the baby adjusted to a different schedule of bonding and feeding so that you are both prepared for the return to work.

If you are a concerned parent who is worried about the health of your baby, then you may be wondering about how to make your own baby food? The main advantage of doing this is that you know exactly what is going into your child’s food, instead of being left in the dark about all of the added preservatives that go into baby food found in the supermarkets.

Then there is the factor of cost. If you are on a tight budget, buying expensive pre-made baby food can quickly start to put a big hole in your wallet. In this kind of situation every penny counts, and once you learn how to make your own baby food, you can very quickly save a nice amount of money that can be used for other expenses.

Some quick tips when making your own baby food

Hygiene

It is very important to have the highest level of hygiene when dealing with food that your baby is going to be eating. Make it a ritual to always fully clean your hands before handling any food, and also give the surfaces in your kitchen a good clean.

Storage

One of the advantages of making your own baby food is that you can make large batches at a time and then store away a large percentage of it. You should always aim to store any baby food as quickly as possible while it is still fresh. It is a good idea to put a date on each container so that you know exactly when the food was stored and when it should be eaten by.

Preparation

You should aim to make the baby food as simple as possible and only use a tiny amount of seasoning or none at all. Getting the right temperature is also an important factor, so it should be your main aim to be certain that any baby food you are preparing is thoroughly cooked before serving. The same principle applies to when you are re-heating food as well. Always check the temperature so that you can be absolutely sure it is perfect.

Using fresh ingredients

One of the main reasons people want to know how to make their own baby food, is because they want to ensure that their baby is getting the freshest of ingredients for optimum health. Using a blender is a great way to make lots of tasty and fresh baby meals, and you can very easily purée fresh fruits and vegetables into a delicious meal. It sometimes takes a bit of work at first to get the right consistency, but once you get it right then it is simple and quick to prepare.

More convenient

As mentioned before, it is possible to make large batches of your own baby food at once, and then store it away for later use. This actually makes producing your own baby food much more convenient than buying it from the shops, as you can be in a situation where you have the majority of your babies meals planned out for the coming weeks ahead.

More control

One of the main reasons you may want to learn how to make your own baby food is control. You want to know exactly what goes into the food so it is as healthy and delicious as possible, and you may also be a little sceptical of the ingredients that are in baby food available at stores.

Another good reason to make your baby food is if your baby has any allergies or food intolerances. This gives you the control to be absolutely sure that there is no trace of a certain food or ingredient that your baby may have a problem with.

Understanding the health risks specific to premature babies will help you be able to administer the proper care for your own “preemie.” It is common for preemie teeth to come in without the protective enamel that are more often subject to decay, a condition known as enamel hypoplasia. It’s also probable that their teeth will erupt from their gums later than usual. And braces are not uncommon for preemies later in life. Here is a closer look at a few problems you can look for in your preemie and some advice about how to deal with them.

Enamel formation. Enamel hypoplasia is four times more likely to occur in preemies than in children carried to full term. It ranges from mild to severe, with some children being prone to cavities, while others require more extensive and continuing dental work to stave it off. Sometimes the effects are not immediately identifiable, and you may have to wait and see how the situation develops. If your child develops enamel hypoplasia, they need to see the dentist on a regular basis and keep up a careful routine of brushing and flossing.

Teething. Preemies don’t receive the same kinds of nutrition in their last weeks of gestation that full term babies do, which has causes many doctors to hypothesize that there is a connection between being born prematurely and the time it takes to begin teething. Usually this time will be delayed, though once again, you may just have to wait and see.

Hard Palate. While being cared for in the NICU (or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), long term intubation may cause a preemie to develop a high groove in their hard palate which can lead to hearing and speech problems as well as displaced teeth positioning.

Discoloration. Preemies who had high bilirubin levels in the NICU may develop a brownish or yellow coloration that only appears on their baby teeth, so don’t bother over-brushing or having them cleaned by a dentist.

Braces and spacing issues. This is a hotly debated issue in the dental world, as many dentists won’t consider the need for braces until after molars have emerged on or around the time a child turns six. Sometimes treatment for preemies with crowded teeth or a hard palate are offered a spacer for the first few years of their lives.

If you are at all concerned about the health of your preemie’s teeth, remember that, the tinier they were, the more prone they are to illnesses and developmental issues. You should search for a pediatric dentist who specializes in the dental hygiene of premature children. You may also find that your baby has an aversion to being touched around the mouth. If this is the case, you can visit a speech therapist who can help you find an easier way of taking your child to the dentist.

It is recommended that most children make their first dentist appointment by the time they turn one. If your child has yet to develop teeth by then, consult your dentist about the appropriate time to begin teeth care.

All opinions are 100% mine.

My preemie twin daughters are going to be 18 years old this week! It is hard to believe that my little 2-lb. birdies will be considered adults soon! Even though my girls had just about every preemie complication go wrong that could go wrong as an infants, we were lucky that they were as healthy as they were growing up. Both girls are on multiple medications for health conditions now (Macy has OCD, and Mallory has Epilepsy), but neither diagnosis is attributed to prematurity.

With the rising costs of prescription medications, I am going to check into joining the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club. For $10 a year, a family membership covers everyone in my immediate family, including my spouse (if I had one), my dependents ages 22 and younger (all four of them) and even my pets (if I had any of those, too)! Individuals can join for only $5 per year. Anyone can join the Prescription Savings Club membership risk free, and if one doesn’t save more money than the cost of the membership fees during one full year of their membership, then Walgreens will refund the difference!

This offer is available through January 31st, 2012. For more details, check out Walgreens on Facebook and/or Walgreens on Twitter.

When you are expecting a new baby, chances are you want everything to be perfect for when he or she arrives. This includes the nursery, which can often be an expensive room to decorate. Fortunately there are ways to decorate a nursery without breaking the bank. All it takes is a little time, planning, and effort, and your little one’s nursery will look just as good as those pricey, high-end nurseries you see on television and the internet.

Develop a Budget

The first step in decorating a nursery on a budget is actually formulating the budget itself. This will give you an idea of what you can afford to spend when it comes to decorations and furnishings. When you have a general figure, you should then create a list of items that are absolutely necessary for your baby’s nursery. This list should include items such as a crib, dresser, and changing table. These are the things that you must purchase to give your little one what he or she needs. After you make a list of needs, then proceed with a list of “wants.” These are the things you want the nursery to have, but can forego if your budget does not permit them.

Pick a Theme

The next step is to pick a theme. When it comes to themes, it is a good idea to choose one that will be appropriate for years to come. This will save you from redoing the nursery when your son or daughter is a toddler or school-aged child. Although many nurseries carry a character theme, these often cost more money because character merchandise is usually more expensive. Try thinking of a general theme that may be appropriate for a boy or a girl, in case you have another baby. For example, a jungle animal theme can be fitting for either a boy or a girl. General themes are nice because you can use items from various stores to decorate. If you choose a specific theme from a specific store, you are usually limited to that store for decorations.

Save on Furniture

Since furniture is typically the most expensive part of a nursery, you should try to cut costs in this area whenever possible. If you have a family member who recently had a baby, ask them if they are willing to sell you their crib or changing table. This can save you a great deal of money. Just remember to use extreme caution if you are using any secondhand items for your baby, as you want it to meet safety regulations and be free of recalls. Always check the internet for lists of recalled baby merchandise before purchasing any new or used items for your newborn. Also make sure any used items are free of defects and in perfect working condition. There are also retailers that offer very reasonable nursery furniture. Check online at stores like Target and Ikea for nursery products. You may be surprised at what you can find for your budget.

Paint is Your Friend

Although many parents choose to use wallpaper for the walls of their baby’s nursery, paint is a much cheaper route and can be just as nice. Try painting the walls and ceiling contrasting colors to create a cool, soothing look. Add some clouds to the ceiling, or try using stencils on the walls. With paint, your options are almost endless because you can update a room as often as you please without spending a fortune.

Be Creative

Decorating a nursery on a budget sometimes requires a little creativity. Visit a craft store and see what they offer for nursery ideas. Pick up some plain wood letters or shapes, and paint them to create a one-of-a-kind wall mural. Think about picking up some cheap picture frames as well. Photos are always a great, cheap decoration for a baby’s nursery. Craft stores are also a great place to look for wall stencils and reasonably priced decorations. Let your creativity run wild and you will be able to make your baby’s nursery a unique, amazing place that he or she will love.

Use Area Rugs

If the carpet or flooring in your baby’s nursery is in less than perfect condition, consider purchasing area rugs to cover the floor. Area rugs can be found for very reasonable prices in almost every color and pattern imaginable. Instead of installing new carpet or flooring, some simple area rugs can give the nursery a customized look without costing you a fortune.

All of these things will help you decorate a nursery on a budget. As long as you take a little time and put forth some effort, your new bundle of joy will have the best looking room on the block.

Every single time you strap your child into their car seat, you should have complete peace of mind that the single device will protect them in the event that there is an accident. In order to feel confident that your car seat if as safe as possible, it is important to use the following checklist when purchasing a new car seat. Don’t settle for the cheapest model or for the first one you see. Instead, be thorough to guarantee that your child is safe no matter what happens.

1. The Size of Your Child: If you are buying a brand new car seat for a newborn, your needs will be very different than if you are purchasing an upgrade for your toddler. Remember that different car seats work best for different sized babies, so keep that in mind. Every baby and the majority of smaller toddlers should be facing the rear of the car when in their car seat. Older children can begin to sit facing the front once they are large enough. While there are some car seats that can be convertible and adjust for your growing child, many parents prefer to stick with a rear facing car seat that won’t move around or have the possibility to closing or adjusting at all.

2. Your Car Model: Although many car seats claim to fit in any car, that is not always the case. If your car seat does not fit the car perfectly, do not use it. Some parents try to make it work rather than return the item, but this can be a safety hazard and potentially dangerous to your child. Instead, ask the staff at the store to try and fit in in your car before purchase. If for some reason this is impossible, make sure you can return the car seat if it does not fit and exchange it for a different one.

3. Online Reviews: If you have picked out a few potential car seats but cannot narrow down your options, look online to see what parents think of the car seats themselves. Look to make sure that people with similar cars to your model have successfully used the car seat and have had no serious problems. If there have been complaints, analyze whether they are general issues or something specific to the car seat in question.

4. Popularity: When you are at the store looking at potential car seat purchases, ask the staff which are the most popular among new parents. Since most parents do some research on which car seat to buy, you can assume that the most popular car seat is also the best choice. Ask staff which car seats are returned most often as well, and avoid purchasing those whenever possible.

Be sure to consider all of these factors when choosing the perfect car seat for your baby. The size of your child, online reviews, popularity and your car model are all important things to think about. Remember that although saving money is important, do not skip any safety features when it comes to your car seat.

She recommends that you compare car insurance online, and also see if you qualify for the cheapest car insurance rates before making your choice.

If you’ve just found out you’re expecting twins, triplets or more, one of the questions on your mind may be whether you will breast feed or formula feed your babies. As you will know, experts agree that breast milk is best for building your baby’s natural defenses and immunity, especially the early milk a mother produces (colostrum) as it includes antibodies which prevent infection in the newborn.

Taking the First Steps in Feeding

It may seem hard to manage breast feeding two or more babies at first, and it’s probably something you’ve been worrying about since you showed your first pregnancy symptoms. If your babies are premature, it might be best to initially use a pump and bottle feed until your babies are strong enough to latch on to the breast. If you do choose to express milk, remember to do it 2-4 hours, even through the night. This can be a great way of getting your partner involved in the feeding process while ensuring your baby is getting all the benefits of breast milk. There are lots of great pumps on the market and if you make the decision to express before you give birth, you could ask for a pump as a gift from family instead of receiving lots of babygros.

Remember that the decision whether to breast feed or not doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You can get advice from your midwife on how to mix breast feeding and formula feeding for your newborns. This mix can make it easier to manage more than one baby as your partner can help with the bottle feeds and any amount of breast milk that your baby gets is better than nothing.

How Long Shall I Feed For?

Experts generally advise to breast feed for over a year, however even breast feeding for one day is healthier for your baby than not at all. Some mothers find it easier to breast feed two babies simultaneously and if you manage to get the hang of this then it can save you time! If this is the case then place the stronger sucker to the breast first so that it will encourage your other breast to express, meaning the weaker sucker won’t have to try as hard to get milk.

If you find breast feeding too hard with twins or triplets, don’t feel guilty. Breast feeding isn’t for everybody and formula milk can offer lots of nutrients too. Make sure you get advice from your midwife on which formulas to use, especially if your infants are premature.

Breastfeeding is the best way to provide your infant with the nutrients that she or he needs in order to be healthy, and it is also good for the health of a new mum as well. Often, however, it is not easy to get the hang of breastfeeding, especially when it is a new experience for a first time mother, and can even be different for each subsequent child. Here are a few basic breastfeeding tips that will help you get started and that will make for a happy and healthy mom and baby.

Knowledge is Power

Getting educated and arming yourself with knowledge about breastfeeding before the baby is even born will give you a major advantage for that first, often frustrating, feeding. Many books, articles, videos and healthcare professionals are there to answer any questions you may have. Knowing what to expect with regards to how it will feel, how to introduce your baby to your breast and how often you need to nurse will make all the difference when it is time to try it out.

Stay Organized

Taking note of when and how often the baby feeds as well as any observations you have during the feeding will help you to remember what works, and from there you can develop a nursing method that will make it easier and more efficient. Include information on when you nursed, for how long, which breast you used last and record anything you did differently and whether it worked or not.

Set up for Success

To make breastfeeding more comfortable for yourself, make sure you have everything you need within arms reach. Have your breastfeeding pillow handy for those impromptu feedings, as well as a burping blanket, a cloth to wipe up spills and extra baby clothes if the current ones get soiled. During the first few weeks you will be breastfeeding often, so make sure you have comfort items for yourself as well, such as a snack, a glass of water, some breastfeeding tops and anything else that will make it a more comfortable experience for you.

Bring on the Burps

Burping midway through and after the feeding is an essential part of breastfeeding, and if some of the milk comes back up, don’t be discouraged as this is perfectly normal. Burping is necessary for your baby to avoid excess gas from developing during digestion, and will reduce a lot of discomfort he or she will feel later on.

Take Care of Yourself, Too

The health of the baby depends on the health of the mother, especially during those first months of breastfeeding. Make sure to fuel up: eating plenty of good food and drinking water regularly will not only keep your baby well nourished, but will also help maintain your own energy levels. Nursing can also cause a lot of soreness for you, so have a warm compress available for yourself after nursing and some lanolin cream for sore nipples to ensure a positive breastfeeding experience in the future.

Sleep When Your Baby Sleeps

Nursing is hard work, and will often require you to be available every couple of hours throughout the day. Getting sleep when it is available is essential for you to stay healthy during this hectic time. This often means that you should take advantage of the moments when you baby is sleeping to get some sleep yourself!

Upon the arrival of a new baby, stress and exhaustion can overwhelm some the feelings of excitement and anticipation that you had during pregnancy. Fortunately, there are many tried and true methods of parenting that help to save time and make your daily activities go more smoothly. The following tips are from experienced mums who have developed efficient methods of caring for an infant, and will help maintain the joy of raising children.

Feeding Time

When the baby arrives, you will find yourself spending the bulk of your time feeding him or her. The following tips will help make feeding time feel less like a nearly constant endeavour:

- Set up a breastfeeding station. You will be spending a lot of time here, so make sure it is well equipped with everything you need to make feeding time super efficient.

- Invest in a co-sleeper. This crib will give you easy access to your baby making it so you don’t even have to leave your bed for night-time feedings.

- Extra baby clothes. Feeding time can be messy, so having a special baby top for feeding is invaluable in saving the time that would otherwise be spent changing your baby’s clothes after every meal.

- Buy some breastfeeding tops. Having the ability to breastfeed any time and anywhere will save time and make it easier for you and baby to leave the house.

- Use a breast pump. They may seem weird at first, but breast pumps are really useful when you just want to grab a feeding bottle and go. Nursing on one side while pumping milk on the other is like two feedings in one!

Bathing Time

This daily activity is extremely important for maintaining your baby’s general health, but is often the first thing on the chopping block of a tired parent. Here are a few good points about bath time that will save you time and effort:

- Shower together. Having your baby play in the tub while you shower gets you both clean while allowing you to have a longer shower but still keep a close eye on your baby.

- Work it into your schedule. Including bath time on your list of activities for the day will ensure that you always have time for it. Make it part of the bed time routine and it will never seem like something extra that must be done.

- Have a bath time kit. A basket filled with all the essentials for bath time will ensure you never have to run around looking for towels, lotions, shampoo and bath toys ever again.

Diaper Changing

Once your baby arrives, you may sometimes feel like you are forever changing diapers – because you are! These tips will help you be ready for a diaper change in any situation:

- Multiple diaper bags. Bags containing extra diapers, cloths, wipes and lotions can be kept in any room in the house and in your car. This way you will never leave the house unprepared.

- Get some night-time gowns. If your baby is wearing a sleeping gown rather than a onesie sleeper, then night-time changes have just become super fast and easy and barely require you to turn on the light.
