From those humble beginnings, the Twins Day Festival each year flirts with breaking the 3000 sets of twins number every year. It is a three-day weekend filled with fun, entertainment, fireworks, and even a wienie roast. Additionally, the Cleveland Indians typically offer special Twins Days at the ballpark, and other places around town extend discounts and specials to those attending the festival.

Each year, the attendees pick a royal court: a set of Kings and Queens, and a set of Princes and Princesses. Each set of twins that applies must write an essay and have been registered for five of the last six-year’s festivals. The winners get to ride in the parade with their royal sashes, crowns and tiaras, and act as the festival’s official representatives.

Events set up over the weekend include a golf tournament, corn hole tournaments and raffles. DJs, dancing, and karaoke are typically set up for Friday evening, and a parade for Saturday, along with a talent show, live musical entertainment, and fireworks. On Sunday, there is a pancake breakfast, 5K race/walk, and more entertainment and talent shows.

If you are a twin or other multiple, you really should make a point to visit Ohio in the late summer. It is beautiful that time of the year, and there is a lot to see and do besides the festival. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland Indians, and Fourth Street Entertainment District are all things to do in downtown Cleveland. Lake Erie and its islands also beckon with tons of water sports and island hopping leisure activities.

I’ve always been fascinated by people that know how to read your palm to tell your future. I mean who isn’t curious about how many children one will have some day?

While I haven’t found any distinct evidence that tells if one will have twins, I have found a few theories on palm reading to see how many children a person will have.

The most repetitive answer I found was to look on the edge of your palm under your pinkie finger. The number of downward lines indicate number of children. Obviously if you only have one line, you are only having a singleton, not twins.

The first thing you will need to do is contact the minister or lay chaplain who will be officiating your double ceremony. Now while they do this day in and day out every Sunday, there is a chance yours will be the first twins they have ever officiated. Luckily for all parties involved the ceremony does not need to be reworked much do work for two children. They might have to double up some parts, but the for the most part the official christening or naming ceremony will work very well.

Once you have the minister on-board with your super double christening, it’s time to plan the fun stuff – the guest list and the party! You are welcome to invite as many friends and family as you would like. And with two “centers of attention” that day, you will get everyone wanting to show up. When you know who will be invited, it’s time order up the christening invitations. Now there might be a little snag here. Most invitations that are “fill in the blank” do not have room for two names. So for here you might need to get custom made ones, or do it yourself.

After the invitations are mailed it’s time to host the party. The party will take place after the actual ceremony at the church occurs. Some people prefer to give the newly christened baby some downtime before the party starts. Depending on their age and mood, they might need a little nap or even have it the next day if needed. But if your twins are well behaved and get their naps on time you can easily host the party that afternoon.

At the party you might also want to serve a christening cake. While you could get two cakes, that really is too much. Every cake baker will be more than happy to personalise a christening cake for your twins with both of their names on it. It’s always a risk, traveling with infants. Even if you’re desperate for some sun and you’ve found your cheap tickets, the change of routine will inevitably cause some upset and the inherent unreliability of international transport could leave you stranded in an unfamiliar place with a loud, tired child making a difficult situation even worse. With twins, you’re simply multiplying the problem by two. Here are the top tips for happy holidays with twins.
If possible, drive
What’s worse than a screaming baby on an international flight? Two screaming babies on an international flight. The pressurized, low-oxygen cabin of a plane, combined with the unsettling sensation of flying and the painful pressure changes of descent, present an environment which is extremely hostile to babies. The car is better, because you can stop as often as you like, drive with the windows down and mop up any fluids in privacy.

Get the right equipment
Make sure your car is correctly fitted with an approved seat for your baby. Follow the instructions for the baby seat as well as the car manual, which will explain how the relevant airbags function and where the appropriate anchor points are.

Pick the right destination
The sun might be calling you, but remember too much sun isn’t good for young infants. You’ll be spending a lot of time covering bored and overheating twins in several protective layers, rather than soaking up the rays in blissful solitude.

Check and double check the airline’s rules
Twins are relatively uncommon, and some airlines may not cater for them very efficiently. Because safety is paramount on airplanes, some carriers have very restrictive seating requirements for families with twins. Oxygen mask locations mean that you may have to sit separately. Most airlines don’t give a baggage allowance to infants, so make sure you don’t go over your limit or you’re likely to face some ferocious fines.

Pack everything you might need
When there are children in tow, there can’t be any last minute airport purchases. Everything must be neatly stowed in your luggage – hand luggage where possible – in case you’re delayed until after shop closing time, or in case you’re suddenly diverted to a more remote airport. Never assume supplies will be available when you touch down.

Board the plane last
This gives your twins less time to get bored, making the journey more pleasant for you and everybody around you.

Take a buggy each
Don’t take your super-duper expensive twin buggy, because it’ll get damaged or lost. What’s more, big wide strollers don’t work on the relatively narrow pavements of some countries, and they don’t fit through most doors. Single buggies are much more maneuverable. If you’re by yourself, take one backpack baby carrier and one pushchair.

Research your destination
The internet is full of information. Before you go, find out where the most child-friendly restaurants are, whether there are crèches you can drop your twins off at for the day, and which hotels see two tired, confused and noisy babies as “cute” rather than “horrendous”.

Do you want to get pregnant with twins? There are plenty of women who would love to have two babies at once and thanks to modern medicine, having twins is no longer just a matter of chance. None of these methods offer any guarantees and they carry some significant risks. Beside that, twin pregnancies have the potential for a range of complications including, as you will know if you are a regular reader of this site, premature birth. Parenting twins also comes with a specific set of challenges.

If none of that deters you, and you are curious about how to get pregnant with twins, here’s a list of things that increases your chances.

1. If you are an older mom, you are more likely to have twins. The chance of having twins goes up with your age because older women release multiple eggs while they are ovulating much more frequently than their younger counterparts.

2. Did you know that people who are twins themselves or at least have a history of twins in their family give birth to twins themselves more often as well? Unless this is true for you, that does not help you much, however.

3. Women who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more have higher odds of conceiving twins, as do those who are taller than average.

4. You must have heard of those famous “Clomid twins”. Clomid is a fertility medication that has helped many thousands of women who were not ovulating naturally have children. Clomid sometimes prompts a woman’s ovaries to deliver a larger number of eggs, making twins or higher multiples a possibility. Around ten percent of all Clomid patients ends up with twins. Before you are tempted to run to a doctor and ask for Clomid to conceive twins, you should know that this medications comes with a large number of side effects. It is also not very probable that you’ll find a doctor willing to prescribe you this drug just because you happen to want two babies at once.

5. Invitro fertilization (IVF) might just offer the best chance of having twins. When multiple embryos are returned to the uterus following IVF, twins can definitely be expected. Not every embryo implants into the lining of the uterus – and it is exactly because transferring several embryos increases the chances of at least one surviving that this is common practice in IVF. Still, twins are pretty prevalent among IVF patients.

Twins are a major attention magnet and that’s true even while you’re pregnant. But what happens to older siblings in the process? They can often lose out on time and attention and only gets worse after the twins are born. Take the attention a new baby usually gets and double it or treble it, especially if your twins are identical. If that child has been used to being the center of attention, he or she might find it hard to take, so here’s how you can improve matters so that all your kids are happy.

Keep Them Informed
Don’t let the birth of your twins be an unwelcome surprise to your toddler or older sibling. Let them know what’s happening in words they can understand. They need to know that you may not be able to pick them up as much and that you may spend some time away. Most kids love the thought of being a big brother or big sister, so make much of this important role and they will be eager to welcome the twins into the world. Other important things they can do include helping you to narrow down names. Older children can also get information and help through books written specifically for them such as I’m Having Twins written by a girl who’s now 13.

After The Birth
Some parents of twins find that giving your child twin dolls so he or she can mimic what you do helps your child to get into the new routine. If they are interested, they can also help you with tasks like helping you pack baby bags for going out, selecting clothes for the babies and so on. Beware, though – don’t turn your older kid into a glorified nanny or your kid will soon get tired of the presence of twins. It’s also important to continue to spend time with the older child that doesn’t revolve around the twins. This might mean taking the child out while leaving the twins with the other parent, arranging play dates for the older sibling or simply booking in some alone time for reading or playing. That will help to reassure older children that they are still important to you.

Managing Expectations
Going out and about can be the toughest time for older siblings as complete strangers stop to coo over the twins. Some parents use strategies like dressing the twins differently, taking them out in single rather than double buggies or including older siblings in conversations about physical or mental attributes. When you have visitors, make much of how helpful the older sibling is and talk about their prowess at sports, music or art so they will know that they are still special to you.

Finally, try your best to maintain some of your pre-twins routines with the older sibling. Play games with your older child when the babies are asleep and stick to the usual bath and bedtime routine. This will help older siblings adjust well to the presence of twins.

Coming up with a name for one baby is hard enough. Coming up with names for twins, or multiples of three or more, creates a whole new level of difficulty, stress, and possibly anxiety.

When you need to name twins, it involves more than simply coming up with a baby name, times two. There are several considerations that are unique to naming multiples.

Since the twins are likely to be together for much of their early life, their names need to work well with each other, as well as with their shared surname. There are a number of ways that the names may not complement each other. These could include factors such as language of the name, style, period, and even just the “sound” of the paired names. For example, the following pairs do not play well together, for obvious reasons:

• Caroline and Ehud
• Noah and Brianna
• Isabella and Wayne
• Sophia and Lachlan

Possibly as a way to avoid the situations noted above, or possibly because it seems the traditional thing to do, parents of twins often turn to similar sounding names, or pairs with a common theme. A glance at the most recent data from the U. S. Social Security Administration, showing the most popular pairs of twin names, reveals the extent of this trend. The top ten twin name sets for a recent year include:

• Jacob and Joshua
• Matthew and Michael
• Madison and Mason
• Ethan and Evan
• Faith and Hope

There are several pitfalls associated with this style of naming for twins.

First, and most important, experts in the field of multiple births would be quick to point out that twins need to feel unique, not like part of a package. It is difficult enough to help twins experience their unique identity, without compounding the problem by giving them matching names. Whether the matching is in the initials, such as “J” above, or in the sound, such as Madison and Mason, or in some other cute fashion, such as Faith and Hope, the likelihood is greater that other people will mix up the twins, making it harder to establish their own personalities.

Second, cute name pairs are almost certain to become a target on the schoolyard. No parent wants their children to be the object of teasing. However, with paired names like “Taylor” and “Tyler”, for example, it may well happen.

Third, a very important fact to remember is that similar sounding names, or similar initials, can easily be mixed up. Where can this happen? With medical records, school records, applications, and so forth. Such mixups, should they occur in the case of medical or pharmacy records, have the potential to be very dangerous. For this reason, even the initials should be different. Jacob and Joshua Smith are both J. Smith in many situations, and there is simply no reason to invite that kind of problem.

So what are parents to do in this situation? Admittedly, it is more difficult than naming one child. But if the suggestions noted above are followed, the major stumbling blocks will likely be avoided. Parents can look for names that complement each other in style, sound, and origin, without falling into the “Mary and Maria” trap. There are thousands of names that work well together, while at the same time maintaining the individuality of each child. Here are just a few suggestions to get you started!

• Hailey and Morgan
• David and Katherine
